Tooth whitening helps to remove stains and discoloration from teeth and to lighten teeth. While whitening is a simple procedure that can drastically improve your smile, it is not a one-time procedure- it will need to be repeated to get the results you want and to maintain the brighter color.
The most common form of tooth whitening uses a gel, containing hydrogen peroxide, that is applied directly to the tooth surface. Tooth whitening can be done either at home or in the dental office.
In office whitening: Dr. Scott will apply a substance that covers and protects the gums around your teeth. Next, a powerful whitening gel will be applied onto the teeth. The gel is left on your teeth for twenty minutes and is then reapplied for a second twenty minute session to help get your teeth their whitest. If you are prone to sensitivity, we also offer a desensitizing take home gel to help minimize sensitivity from the whitening.
At home whitening: Dr. Scott will take an impression of your teeth to create a custom mouthpiece for both the upper and lower teeth that fits properly. It's important that the mouthpiece fits well so that the whitening gel will remain in contact with your teeth. Once at home, you will fill each mouthpiece with a whitening gel that Dr. Scott provided. The mouthpiece needs to be worn several hours a day with the gel to get the best results. Most patients achieve the whitening they desire within one to two weeks, but it can take up to four weeks.
